Modern AV environments are shifting from fixed point-to-point cabling toward flexible, network driven architectures. Two technologies lead this evolution: AV over IP and NDI.

Electrosonic SA supplies both Kramer and Lumens AVoIP and NDI solutions, which gives System Integrators the freedom to design the right architecture for each project.

This blog highlights the strengths of both technologies and focuses on two leading solutions: the Kramer KDS-17 and the Lumens OIP-N60D.

AV over IP: The Backbone for Enterprise Distribution

AV over IP refers to transporting audio, video and control across standard IP networks. This approach scales from small room systems to large multi-building deployments. The Kramer KDS-17 series represents this with a full suite of encoders, decoders and management tools designed for enterprise installations.

Kramer KDS-17: Enterprise Grade AVoIP Streaming

The KDS-17 platform delivers 4K60 4:4:4 video over a 1 GbE network using JPEG2000-style compression. This allows premium image quality without upgrading to 10 Gb infrastructure. It is designed for command centres, meeting rooms, video walls and auditoriums.

Key performance advantages include:
• Ultra-high video clarity at 4K60 4:4:4
• Digital audio with Dante and AES67 options
• USB 2.0 extension for cameras and microphones
• One-second switching between sources
• Support for video walls up to 256 screens
• Up to 1000 video sources for large deployments
• Enterprise-level security including 802.1x, TLS and optional AES256 stream encryption
• Dual Ethernet ports to separate control and AV traffic for network stability

Kramer’s AVoIP Manager software allows grouping, batch configuration, presets and role-based access control. The platform is designed for fast deployment and long-term reliability.

NDI Workflows: Flexible and Software Friendly

NDI is an IP video protocol widely used in broadcast, live production, hybrid classrooms and streaming environments. Lumens strengthens this space with the OIP-N60D which is a compact and powerful NDI and IP video decoder.

Versatile 4K NDI and IP Decoder

Lumens’ OIP-N60D decodes 4K and HD signals from NDI HX3, NDI HX2 and RTSP, outputting directly to HDMI or converting the stream to a USB webcam signal for conferencing platforms.

Key capabilities include:
• Decoding up to 2160p60 from NDI HX3 and IP streams
• Ultra-low-latency AV over IP delivery
• USB conversion for UVC and UAC software such as Teams, Zoom and OBS
• Video wall support in landscape or portrait orientation
• PoE operation for cleaner installation
• USB webcam extension across the IP network
• Compact size for easy placement behind screens or in cabinets

This makes the OIP-N60D ideal for hybrid meeting spaces, lecture capture rooms, streaming environments and distributed signage.

WHEN TO USE EACH TECHNOLOGY

Choose Kramer KDS-17 when you need:
• Enterprise-scale AV distribution
• 4K60 4:4:4 quality in high-detail environments
• Secure routing across managed networks
• Large video walls and multi-room expansion
• Centralised management across many endpoints

Choose Lumens OIP-N60D when you need:
• NDI HX3 support for streaming or production workflows
• Converting network video to HDMI or USB
• Hybrid meeting room integration
• Compact endpoints for signage or education
• Low-latency source switching

Many South African installations use both approaches effectively. Kramer KDS-17 forms the AV backbone, while Lumens OIP-N60D units act as intelligent endpoint decoders across meeting rooms, signage networks and streaming facilities.

Electrosonic SA’s Role in Successful AV over IP Design

As the authorised distributor for both Kramer and Lumens, Electrosonic SA supports System Integrators from design to deployment. This includes network planning, product specification, local stock and technical support across South Africa. The result is a stable, scalable and future-ready AV environment that can grow alongside your organisation.
