By Bruce Schwartz

In the bustling hub of Midrand, The Sound Room has been a beacon of events and entertainment since its opening in 2009. This venue tucked away in a business park is known for its vibrant atmosphere and cutting-edge Lighting and massive sound system.

The Sound Room gets ONYX and NX-Touch

Electrosonic was involved in the Sound Room from its inception, supplying a Helvar Architectural lighting control system and the legendary Martin Lightjockey control system for the dance floor lighting. The Lightjockey system has since provided faithful service for the last 15 years in spite of a few PC Changes.

Darryl Laird who manages The Sound Room with his many years of being in the Pro AV industry has always been passionate about providing the best experience for his patrons. Over the years, he had built a strong relationship with Electrosonic SA, particularly with Bruce Schwartz, a long-time friend and trusted advisor. As technology advanced, Darryl realized it was time to upgrade the lighting control system to ensure his venue remained at the forefront of the industry.

After consulting with Bruce and test driving a solution, the decision was clear. A new ONYX control system (by Obsidian), paired with a NX Touch interface, was the perfect solution for his needs. With its advanced software features and user-friendly design, it promised to elevate the Sound Room's lighting rig.

The upgrade process began with the procurement of a brand-new PC, the foundation for the ONYX software platform. Matthew Mitchell from Electrosonic took on the task of implementing the upgrade. He re-created the patch for The Sound Room, as the old PC has lost all data and assisted in creating cues for the many types of events that the Sound Room hosts.

However, the transition wasn’t without its challenges. Some of the older fixtures were not in the ONYX library, but the advantage of the ONYX platform is that new fixture profiles could be built and supplied within a day. Once tested the refreshed control system was ready to work.

Here’s to another 15 years of control, innovation and friendship. Many thanks to Darryl for his unwavering support of Electrosonic for our continued partnership.
