ICC ARENA - FOYER
The state-of-the-art ICC Durban Indoor Arena was unveiled in March 2007 to an audience of over 2500 people and a stage line-up that included international superstars George Benson and Al Jarreau.
Jarreau referred to the venue as a 'beacon' and the national Minister of Transport, Jeff Redebe, said; "The ICC Durban and its new indoor arena, The Dube Trade Port and the La Mercy Airport, will provide a symbiotic relationship in entertainment, business and travel."
ICC Durban's chief executive officer, Mr Miller Matola celebrated what he referred to as 'the birth of a new brand, which would blaze a new trail and open fresh markets for the ICC."
Leading concert promoters, including Hazel and Tony Feldman of Showtime Management (who brought out Benson and Jarreau), expressed their approval of this long awaited venue and commented on the beauty and practicality of the design.
A proud eThekwini Mayor, Obed Mlaba, said that the ICC Durban had exceeded all expectations and he looked forward to having a world-class facility that would assist the city in securing major international concerts and sporting events.
KwaZulu-Natal premier, S'bu Ndebele said; "The opening of this magnificent centre represents the re-birth of the ICC during its tenth operational year and it also represents the re-birth of the province.
The showcase ICC Durban Arena can accommodate audiences of up to 10 000. The flexibility of the design allows for numerous configurations to stage a variety of events, including theatrical events, indoor tennis, wrestling, boxing, hockey, gymnastics, motocross and even equestrian events.
The equipment used in the show was supplied by Electrosonic, Prosound and Gearhouse with support from Black Coffee, YRD media and Selbys to name but a few.
The Arena foyer interior designer Ian Falconer used 3 x Martin Mac 700 profiles to create the sculpture of light, projecting colourful images onto the white surfaces which can be seen from all angles in the foyer and also creates beautiful textures outside the building.
The programming was done on a Martin Light Jockey and Light Jockey Manager. Schalk Botha from Electrosonic KZN did the programming and it took 20 hours to program the work of art. The gobos were supplied by Custom Gobos. The Mac 700s were supplied by Richard Gild from Hi-Zone.
