PLASA 2009

As usual in spring each year, Bruce Schwartz of Electrosonic flew to London to attend the PLASA show. This year’s event was notably smaller and quieter than in previous years, but most of the familiar faces were still to be seen, including locals Mike Jones, Manny Manim, Dennis Hutchinson and Declan Randall.
PLASA 2009 marked the launch of Philips Entertainment Lighting Group, which now includes Selecon Lighting.  The synergy of the group was demonstrated by their stand which featured control products from Strand, luminaires from Selecon and moving lights from Vari+Lite.  Particular interest was shown in the SDP display profile from Selecon, and Mark Goldberg from Selecon commented on Electrosonic’s excellent performance with Selecon products.

Martin Professional had a number of products on display: their new and expanding range of LED lighting solutions; their first LED moving heads - the MAC401 Dual and the MAC301 Wash; LED video solutions; LED luminaries; Martin MEL and MSL for indoor and outdoor use; the Maxxyz Modules, the Maxedia 4; and their first lighting controller specifically designed for architectural use with dynamic colour changing fixtures – the ColorFox VX01. The Jem ZR44 Hi-Mass and the Magnum Wireless fog and haze machines were also demonstrated.

Compulite introduced 2 new consoles – the Vector Violet and the Vector Ultra Violet - which were developed in response to requests from touring lighting designers and venues for a compact lightweight portable console that would not compromise power and creativity for size.

Litec did not have their own stand, but was represented at the stand of their UK distributor, AC Lighting.

PLASA 2009 was not the sole purpose of Bruce’s trip abroad. Before the show he attended the Martin Dealer Conference that was held in London and was introduced to the Maxxyz Modules, MAC401 LED, Flexdot and P3 video processors.  Following the show, he, Dylan Briddle and Craig Killian visited the Litec factory in Treviso, Italy. Thereafter, Bruce made a trip to Electrosonic in Dartford to meet with Helvar representatives and catch up with Helvar’s latest developments in dimming solutions.

“PLASA was great, as usual. Being there always reminds me that we have world class brands of which we can be proud, and the knowledge we gained from this trip will put us in a good stead for 2010,” said Bruce.
