VODACOM DURBAN JULY
MARTIN WINS AT THE VODACOM DURBAN JULY
The country’s favourite horse race – the Vodacom Durban July – was once again the winter event of the year (not that anyone can tell that it’s winter in Durban). Some race-goers were glum because it was not the favourite runner, ‘Pocket Power’ who crossed the finish line first, but outsider, ‘Big City Life’, who brought home the gold.
Setting up the lighting for the event began the previous Monday, with final tweaking occurring only minutes before the gates opened on the Saturday. Schalk Botha from Electrosonic KZN was at the Greyville race course to cast an eye over the set-up, and had only “well done!” to say to the crew from Hire Zone who supplied and ran most of the technical aspects of the event.
Hire Zone was contracted by the VDP Group, SA’s leading nightclub franchise holder for Tiger Tiger, Clapham Grand, Manhattan and Joe Cools.
The equipment list included 6 x Martin MAC 575 Kryptons, 4 MAC 600 Washes, 4 x MX 10, 2 x MAC 250+, 6 x MAC 250 Entours, 4 MAC 250 Washes and 2 x Jem ZR33 smoke machines. All the lights were controlled by a Compulite Rave console.

Black Lock, owner of Durban DJ’s commented “It was great to work with Martin and Jem – the product is very reliable and the smoke machines very stable. What a pleasure it is to work with equipment that just keeps on delivering the goods hour after hour! The guys from Electrosonic were on hand to give support and help wherever they could, and a special thanks to Jacques and East Coast Productions for meeting the requirements set out by Durban DJs and the assistance given during the setup. Guess next year will even be bigger!”
